Disney’s Polynesian Princess Moana Art: Fact or Fiction?

Disney's Moana This little bit of news slipped under my radar when first announced back in July on Rotoscopers. There was more discussion back in December when a supposed piece of concept art was released, then pulled for not being official. That artwork is now making the rounds again, which is how I saw it on twitter yesterday. The artwork made me excited, official or not, and I thought if nothing else, getting the word out there to share interest in this upcoming film and its subject, couldn’t hurt. So what is Moana going to be about? Think Tiki!

According to BlueSkyDisney.com:

“After a short break we’ll finally get Ron [Clements] and John [Musker]’s next feature, “Moana” which will be a Polynesian tale involving the island folk and the idols made famous the world over.  It will also mark the directing duo’s first computer animated film, or at least computer hybrid animated film (think “Paperman”).  Following that, if story issues are worked out Dean Wellin’s teenage space race animated film will rush to the screens.  Wellin’s film is an unusual story that is different from most Disney Animation, just as Big Hero 6 marks a change in perception of what comes from the Mouse.”

More details, from BleedingCool.com were first broken in October:

“…it’s an epic, or even mythic, adventure set around 2000 years ago and across a series of islands in the South Pacific.

The lead character, Moana Waialiki is the only daughter of a Chief in a long line of navigators. She’s really a bit of nerd, but a nerd about sea voyaging, and when her family need her help, she sets off on an epic journey. Some of the other characters are demi-gods and spirits drawn from real mythology.”

Given those details, I may be on board with the following image not being official or from Moana at all. Being obsessed with navigating the sea doesn’t seem to match with splashing around on a rock in a grotto…but it is pretty nonetheless! It reminds me instantly of Shag‘s work, but concept art has surprised us before, so who knows. This image below is reportedly by artist Sue Nichols.

Not Moana

More than just the artwork controversy above, I can’t wait to see this tale unfold. I think tiki culture is something that has intrigued us for decades; its mysterious, tropical allure has survived for centuries and certainly risen to the heights of pop culture since the 1950’s. I look forward to another potential princess that doesn’t have her future gift-wrapped for her by way of a magic wand, and hope Disney has learned from the successes of Merida in Brave and Anna in Frozen (and to an extend Rapunzel too). And obviously, any time Disney can use its platform to explore, educate and promote other cultures and backgrounds, and give little girls (and boys) someone to identify with, I’m all for it.

As far as the tiki gods and their role in the story, I hope we get a reverent history lesson rather than bathroom humor and goofy sidekicks. This is something which Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli have done for years and years with great success. Proof that animation can be for adults as well as children and we don’t need to rely on some formula of strife + main character + comic relief + happy ending = the only way. If the story is good, audiences will come. Anyway, I’ll get off my fangirl soapbox for now and just hope we get a Polynesian Princess we can all be proud of.

Moana will be a musical, with music composed by Mark Mancina, responsible for music arranging on The Lion King, Tarzan, and Brother Bear among many others.

Details of the Wizarding World of Harry Potter’s Diagon Alley Expansion

Universal Orlando Resort held a live webcast this morning, complete with 3 stars of the Harry Potter films, to share details, concept art and a peek into the newest section of Universal Studios Florida:  Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Diagon Alley. Being a huge Harry Potter fan, I am beyond excited to experience this new area first hand, and after seeing today’s webcast, I do not think I will be disappointed.

Seeing inside the Hogwarts Express and hearing that it will pass by modern day London, with a view of the Knight Bus before passing through the brick wall to Diagon Alley was a treat. The list of shops and places to eat inside Diagon Alley is perfect and they even brought Knockturn Alley over to stay true to the films. I’m just thrilled about all of these details and cannot wait for summer 2014 to travel to Diagon Alley in person! It was also fun to have my submitted question asked and answered on the webcast. I asked how they decided which iconic elements of Diagon Alley to recreate in the park and they said with so many amazing iconic themes to work with, they listened to fans and what they wanted and made sure to stay true to the films – and it definitely looks like they did. Here is the full webcast, recorded live by my friend and YouTuber The Big Fat Panda: (my question is at around the 20:00 mark, but Mark messed up and said iconographic my mistake 😉 )

Here are all the official Universal Orlando Resort details from the update and the concept art revealed today:

“Never before has a theme park created a guest experience like this: you climb aboard the Hogwarts Express in Hogsmeade and moments later arrive at King’s Cross Station – where the wonders of London and Diagon Alley unfold before you.  And it is all real.

With this summer’s opening of The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Diagon Alley, Universal Orlando Resort and Warner Bros. Entertainment will bring even more of Harry Potter’s adventures to life inside a new, magnificently themed area that includes a revolutionary attraction experience, as well as all-new themed shops and dining.

The two companies today revealed first-ever details about the new area and the one-of-a-kind adventures it will offer the whole family.  The spectacularly themed environment will double the size of the sweeping area already dedicated to Harry Potter’s adventures at Universal Orlando, expanding it across both Universal theme parks.

And – just like in the books and films – guests will be able to travel between the two areas aboard the iconic Hogwarts Express.

Universal Orlando launched a global phenomenon when it opened The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Hogsmeade at its Islands of Adventure theme park in 2010.  That area includes the iconic Hogwarts castle – which houses the groundbreaking Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey attraction – and the village of Hogsmeade.  The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Diagon Alley will be located within Universal Orlando’s second theme park, Universal Studios, and will create new experiences based on the signature areas of London, Diagon Alley and Knockturn Alley.

Universal’s creative team has been working closely with Stuart Craig and the production team from the Harry Potter films to make the new area as authentic and spectacular as possible – just as it did with The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Hogsmeade.

The vision for The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Diagon Alley is unprecedented, with Universal Orlando creating the world’s first centrally themed, multi-park experience.

After arriving at King’s Cross Station aboard the Hogwarts Express, guests will pass through London and the iconic brick wall archway from the films into Diagon Alley – a bustling, wizarding hub within a Muggle city.  There will be shops, dining experiences, and a new ride called Harry Potter and the Escape from Gringotts – a multi-sensory, multi-dimensional journey that will take theme park attractions to a new level.

The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Diagon Alley will give visitors the exciting opportunity to:

  • Board the Hogwarts Express and journey between London’s King’s Cross Station (located in Universal Studios Florida) and Hogsmeade Station (located in Universal’s Islands of Adventure). The journey will be filled with views of London and the British countryside – as well as a few surprises. Park-to-park admission is required.

D23 Destination D 2014 As a charter member of D23 – I really am grateful for its existence. It brought Walt Disney history to life for me, and really, led to my first visit to Disneyland in 2011 for the D23 Expo (and I’ve now been back 5 times since!). So I’m thrilled that D23 is announcing its next Destination D event will be held here in Walt Disney World again. This was the first D23 event I attended, and it really made me realize how important it is to support those in the company who truly care about its past and work at being stewards for its future.  I also couldn’t be more excited that they will be paying homage to the 1964-65 New York World’s Fair. My mother actually attended this World’s Fair and it of course holds a special place in my heart. Here is the official news from D23 directly, with info on each event and a full 2014 calendar of events:

DESTINATION D: ATTRACTION REWIND presented by H20 Plus: Walt Disney once said, “Disneyland will never be completed. It will continue to grow as long as there is imagination left in the world.” It’s in that spirit that guests this summer will have the opportunity to visit—or revisit—some of the most beloved Disney attractions of yesteryear.Destination D: Attraction Rewind, held July 26 and 27 at Walt Disney World Resort, will bring Disney archivists, Imagineers, Legends and luminaries together to celebrate fan favorites such as Adventure Thru Inner Space, If You Had Wings, and 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea with rarely seen concept art and images; vintage video clips; and revealing stories. In addition, several presentations will be dedicated to the 1964–65 New York World’s Fair, which spawned beloved attractions like it’s a small world and Carousel of Progress.

MARY POPPINS 50th ANNIVERSARY SCREENING: On August 24, 2014—nearly 50 years to the day on which this beloved classic premiered—D23 will celebrate with a very special screening event.

D23’S DISNEY FANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION: For the third year in a row, D23 will hit the road, visiting cities across the U.S. to commemorate dozens of magical Disney milestones celebrating landmark anniversaries this year. Hosted by Disney archivists and the D23 Team, D23’s Disney Fanniversary Celebration events will be held in Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, Orlando, New York City, Seattle, and other cities in fall 2014. Fanniversary 2014 will revisit some of the most beloved theme park attractions, animated and live-action films, characters, TV series, and more than 90 years of Disney history including Donald Duck, the 1964–65 New York World’s Fair, Sleeping Beauty, Haunted Mansion, Disney’s Hollywood Studios, The Little Mermaid, and many more. Fanniversary events will be open to the public, with special admission prices and surprises created for D23 Members in attendance.

D23’S LUNCH WITH A LEGEND: A limited number of D23 Members will join Disney Legend Marty Sklar for a private luncheon on The Walt Disney Studios lot, where Marty will talk about his extraordinary 54-year career with Disney. Look for additional “Legendary” lunches later this year.

DISNEY STORE MEMBER MIXERS: After giving members a peek at the reimagined stores in Florida, Kansas, New Jersey, California, and Nevada in 2013, Disney Store will once again invite D23 Members for exclusive mornings of shopping, discounts, games and goodies.

MICKEY’S OF GLENDALE: The Walt Disney Imagineering employee store in Glendale, Calif., will open its doors to D23 Members on April 26, June 21, and other dates throughout the year, with special guests and surprises. Members will have an opportunity to purchase limited-edition merchandise and view the park-like grounds at Walt Disney Parks & Resorts’ creative “think tank.”

SCREENINGS ON THE DISNEY STUDIO LOT: Throughout the year, D23 will continue its popular movie screenings inside the historic Studio Theatre at The Walt Disney Studios in Burbank. The 2014 roster includes Sleeping Beauty, The Jungle Book, The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad, and The Little Mermaid.

D23 DAY AT THE WALT DISNEY STUDIOS AND ARCHIVES: D23’s members-only tours of the historic Studio Lot and Walt Disney Archives in Burbank return, highlighting historic moments from Disney film, television, and theme parks—as well as showcasing many of the external locations used for filming Saving Mr. Banks. Tours will take placeMarch 22, May 31, August 2, and November 8.

SIGNATURE EVENTS: Look for the return of some favorites, including the popular holiday offering DISNEY AND DICKENS (in Burbank in December), as well as other D23 traditions.

Not saying I’d want to stay there (I moved to Florida for a reason!) but it sure is pretty to look at! Check out the official press release and photos below of the Hotel de Glace Disney Frozen suite and “activity cave.”  Not sure what that means, but hopefully it involves building a snowman, or at the very least – warm hugs.

Tangled Themed Hotel Rooms at Tokyo Disneyland Hotel

Back in 2014, I saw these photos scroll past my instagram feed and was overwhelmed with how beautiful this new Tangled themed hotel guest room was. I admit, I had no idea for sure where these rooms were or that they were coming, but I instantly assumed Tokyo Disneyland (they get all the cool stuff!).

Come to find out these were the new guest rooms for the 30th Anniversary or “Happiness Year” over at Tokyo Disneyland Resort. These rooms join several other character themed guest rooms in the Tokyo Disneyland Hotel, including Peter Pan, Cinderella, Snow White, and Alice in Wonderland. In my opinion, none compare to the Tangled themed rooms! These beautiful rooms feature Rapunzel, Flynn, and Maximus, and of course the iconic Tangled lantern scene we all fell in love with. I had to share the love with you all, by sharing these photos below, from Instagrammer @eva_lin_1118. Enjoy!

At last I see the light! And it’s in Tokyo Disneyland Resort! 😉

EDITED 3/23/20: I’ve just checked and it appears that these Tangled themed hotel rooms are no longer available at Tokyo Disneyland Hotel. The current character themed rooms available are: Tinker Bell, Alice in Wonderland, Beauty and the Beast, and Cinderella. I think I’ll scour the internet and find some photos of those rooms as well to share with you here! 🙂

With the recent announcement on the Disney Parks blog about an upcoming Minnie and Mickey Disney Dooney & Bourke design, this little beauty seemed to sneak in under the radar – Spotted by helpful friends across the land – an all-new “it’s a small world” Disney Dooney has appeared!

Very little is known about this now, it was first seen in Disneyland last week at Vault 28 at the Downtown Disney District. But it seemed to vanish quickly. (EDIT – Check below for more info!) There have been a few outrageous sales on ebay for the bag…but hopefully it will be in larger supply soon. Special thanks to friends of the blog for letting us share their photos! Here it is:

It's a Small World Disney Dooney

It's a Small World Disney Dooney

What are your thoughts? Personally, I like the Small World building design, but think overall this isn’t my favorite design. Perhaps the whimsy and colors of Mary Blair’s art and design would’ve been better served in a fabric design without so much leather involved. That’s just me though, what to you think? It’s definitely a more neutral design for those looking for a subtle Disney touch. Of course I’ll keep you posted about additional bag styles if any for this design and information about purchase and price.

UPDATE: This bag is now available on DisneyStore.com. The price is $285 and it appears the tote is the only style available.

2nd UPDATE: Just received word that these bags are now at Mouse Gear in Epcot! Thanks Shaene Carson for the tip!

Gaylord Palms ICE Offers a Spectacular Holiday Celebration

Gaylord Palms ICE Gaylord Palms in Kissimmee is without a doubt one of my favorite resorts in the Orlando area. Any time of the year, you can escape the hustle and bustle of the theme park world into the gorgeous resort and grounds. With its beautiful atrium lobby and different native Florida-themed areas, it is just beautiful. Add to that all of the wonderful holiday offerings, and Gaylord Palms is a must-visit at this time of the year. Of course its most famous holiday attraction is ICE! – an annual tradition showcasing art in ice with a different theme each year. This year has been my favorite so far – Frosty the Snowman – the perfect match for the holidays!

Join Frosty and his friends at this year’s ICE! in a colorfully frozen retelling of the original holiday classic. Slide down four different two-story ice slides, and then witness the all-new Artisans in Action before enjoying hot cocoa and capturing holiday memories with a keepsake photograph with Santa, or building gingerbread houses with Gingy!

New this year, ICE! shows us a peek into just what it takes to create these amazing sculptures. Seeing the transformation from ice block to work of art was one of my favorite parts of ICE! this year. Visit the live ice-carving zone during all hours the ICE! attraction is open. The Frostbite Factory features an artisan carving a square block of ice into one of three sculptures from the attraction: a Christmas train, a teddy bear and some traditional Chinese dragons. Guests are also given the option to make reservations for a VIP tour in which a translator is present with the artisan to answer specific questions.

Fun Facts:
Four different artisans will rotate hour shifts in the carving room. They’ll be handling maintenance items for the attraction as well. Two construction team members are also present in the room, preparing ice for carving and cleaning to ensure a safe environment for guests as the artisan works.
During the 44-day run, 60 percent of the attraction will be replaced.
1.5 truckloads of ice (176, 300-pound blocks of ice, or 26.4 tons) will be used for the carving room.
The 12 vignettes of ICE! are created using a special “recipe” of ice that arrives in approximately 36 truckloads over a three-week period (two trucks a day for 15 days). Large blocks of ice are delivered on pallets via refrigerated tractor-trailers, and then moved into place by forklift.
Three different types of ice comprise the ICE! attraction: clear, “crystal” ice; white ice; and colored ice.
14 different colors (including clear) are used to create 10 scenes of ICE!
At 9 degrees cold, ordinary water freezes quickly, adhering one piece to another and forming a solid bond. After slicing a piece of ice from a larger block, an artisan sprinkles the surface to be bonded with “snow.” He carefully pours water onto the piece and then lifts it into position.
The tallest sculpture (21 feet to the top!) is the moon on top of one of the slides.

Gaylord Palms ICE

Don’t miss all the Christmas activities and spectacular live entertainment – including the spirited Luminescence show – that Gaylord Palms has to offer. Always a fan-favorite, the famous 54-foot-tall majestic Christmas tree comes to life in a magnificent tree-lighting ceremony on the Emerald Plaza stage in the St. Augustine atrium. Dripping with poinsettias, lavish holiday displays and millions of twinkling lights, the resort is sure to warm up your stay.

Luminescence is so well-done, it offers something for everyone from dancing acrobats to holiday singers to rocking guitarists and drummers. It definitely puts you in the holiday spirit and is a must-see show. I definitely want to head back to Gaylord Palms to see all the festivities again before the season is done!

Now Nick Hotel is offering their 3rd annual Let it Snow holiday event. My family was invited to check out the festivities and it was really a fun night. How fun is it to have it “snow” poolside in Florida? The shows are big hits with the kids too and of course, Santa was on hand for photos and wish list discussions. Here are some photos and the official info below:
