What Would Historically Accurate Disney Princesses Look Like?

One artist, Claire Hummel has taken it upon herself to answer this question. She shares her creations at her Tumblr blog and her DeviantArt page. Claire has been sharing these visions since March of this year and according to her FAQ, plans to continue giving more Disney characters a fashionistically (yes, I just made that word up) accurate twist. I encourage you to visit her blog and seek out each original posting, as she goes into detail about the process behind her decisions for each look as well as sharing some videos of the process. In the meantime, I thought I’d post all of the current princesses she has shared to date – EDITED to add – she has now added Mulan, Tiana, and Rapunzel, which I’ve updated below. Check out her links above for more info and to purchase prints! (click to enlarge)

Tangled Movie Review

I mentioned previously that I was honored to attend the Walt Disney World Holiday Showcase as a representative of the Walt Disney World Moms Panel. Part of that weekend included a screening of Disney’s Tangled before its November 24th nationwide release. I know I’ve shared some funny clips that Disney passed along showcasing the film, but honestly, they do not begin to do justice to the actual film itself. I realize they are trying to get audiences super excited about what many people view as “just another animated film” but I truly feel that when families of all ages and sizes see the movie, word of mouth will be all that’s needed to make Tangled a success.

Tangled lantern scene We knew going in that Tangled was the classic tale of Rapunzel, but with a twist. What we didn’t know was the unique backstory that Tangled provides, which actually works. It’s sort of like Sleeping Beauty meets Cinderella meets Little Mermaid. Rapunzel’s parents have lost her, however unlike Sleeping Beauty, she is stolen by the evil “Mother” Gothel who kidnaps Rapunzel for her own selfish gains. Rapunzel is somewhat happily living in her impenetrable tower up until her 18th birthday, where her birthday wish is to see the “stars” or lanterns that float in the sky each year on her birthday. What she doesn’t realize is that the lanterns are set into the sky by her real parents as they continue the vigil to seek out their missing daughter, and the townspeople who also hope for the princess’ return.

Disney Tangled Rapunzel Disney just sent over these clips from their new animated feature film Tangled and I actually rushed to update here and share them with you, they are that great!

The first video – a vignette entitled “Grounded For Life” actually made me laugh out loud. This was a great little piece put together by Disney that really endears you to Rapunzel and her plight. I’m sure kids and tweens can relate to their own not-quite-so-severe groundings!

Tangled Rapunzel Princess Pasta I was flipping through the November issue of Parents magazine, and this little article in the “Time for Fun | Play With Your Food” section caught my eye! I Thought I’d share it for all those with little ones who are as excited as we grown-ups about Disney’s upcoming animated feature Tangled! I’m sure even the little prince’s out there would love this fun twist on pasta.

Here’s what Parents magazine says to do:

“Boil a handful of angel-hair (capellini) pasta plus a few green bow ties (farfalle), and toss in butter or olive oil. Place angel hair on a plate as shown, and decorate with a bow tie. “

I’m going to try this out with my princess and two princes, I hope you will too!

Don’t forget Disney’s Tangled opens in theatres on November 24 – when Rapunzel will let her hair down with her best friend Pascal the chameleon, Flynn Rider and Max the horse!

Tangled one-sheet Walt Disney Pictures presents “Tangled,” one of the most hilarious, hair-raising tales ever told.  When the kingdom’s most wanted—and most charming—bandit Flynn Rider (voice of Zachary Levi) hides out in a mysterious tower, he’s taken hostage by Rapunzel (voice of Mandy Moore), a beautiful and feisty tower-bound teen with 70 feet of magical, golden hair.  Flynn’s curious captor, who’s looking for her ticket out of the tower where she’s been locked away for years, strikes a deal with the handsome thief and the unlikely duo sets off on an action-packed escapade, complete with a super-cop horse, an over-protective chameleon and a gruff gang of pub thugs. In theaters this holiday season in Disney Digital 3D™, “Tangled” is a story of adventure, heart, humor and hair—lots of hair.

Rapunzel may have lived her entire life locked inside a hidden tower, but Rapunzel is no damsel in distress. The girl with the 70 feet of golden hair is an energetic, inquisitive teenager who fills her days with art, books, and imagination.  Rapunzel is full of curiosity about the outside world, and she can’t help but feel that her true destiny lies outside of the lonely tower walls.  Rapunzel has always obeyed Mother Gothel by staying hidden away and keeping her magical hair a secret… but with her 18th birthday just a day away, she is fed up with her sheltered life and ready for adventure.  When a charming thief seeks refuge in her tower, Rapunzel defies Gothel and seizes the opportunity to answer the call of the kingdom.  With the unwilling Flynn Rider along for the journey, Rapunzel leaves the tower for the first time, and begins a hilarious, hair-raising journey that will untangle many secrets along the way.

Several images from the film have been released, including the newest – Mother Gothel.  She may be controlling, manipulative and over-protective, but Mother Gothel is the only mother Rapunzel has ever known.  By stealing Rapunzel as an infant and raising her in the tower, Gothel ensured that she alone would have access to Rapunzel’s magical hair, which she uses as her personal fountain of youth. Gothel loves Rapunzel more as a possession than as a daughter, and uses every weapon in her arsenal – including a constant flow of subtle jabs, backhanded compliments and over-the-top guilt trips – to keep Rapunzel hidden away. When Rapunzel finally defies her wishes and ventures out into the world, the delightfully deranged Gothel will to stop at nothing to get her little girl back into the tower.
