Finding Some Sparkle in Downtown Disney – Arribas Brothers

The last time I visited Downtown Disney Marketplace with my family, my son wanted to go into Arribas Brothers because he knew they had swords. He’s always loved swords and since the similar shop that once lived inside Cinderella Castle is now gone, this is one of the few places to see them.  We visit the parks and resorts so often, I admit I sometimes take for granted all that Walt Disney World has to offer because we sometimes rely too much on “oh, we’ll see it next time”. So it had actually been a while since I checked out the Arribas Brothers store.

I’ve always had a soft spot for the store as well. As a child, watching someone create art out of glass right before your eyes is always astonishing. Later, when I took a high school trip to Europe, we stopped in Toledo, Spain. There we visited shops that sold hand-crafted swords as well as damascene.

Damascene, or damasquina as the locals call it, is the ancient Moorish art of inlaying gold (or copper or silver) against a matte steel backdrop. The originally light grey steel is scratched and the gold is hammered into the crevices in intricate designs. Then the steel plate is baked in a kiln and blackened while the gold melts into the crevices. When it has cooled, the artist may use special hammers to pound delicate marks into the re-hardened gold. There are two types of damascene: the Spanish, which often features birds or people or scenes out of history, and the Moorish, which features geometric designs. The name comes from the city of Damascus, which was once renowned for its damascene.1

I remember bringing home a brooch for my mother, and then being so excited to show her some of the same designs and explain how it was made to her when we visited Disney World the next year.  It was fun to know a little bit of the history behind what was being sold at Disney. It’s also always nice to look beyond the t-shirts and yes, even Vinylmation figures, and see different styles of art and collectibles.

The Arribas brothers, Tomas and Alfonso, were taught the family art of glass cutting as young men in Spain. They began their affiliation with Disney way back in 1964 when they met Walt Disney at the World’s Fair in New York City and later opened a studio in Disneyland in 1967. It wasn’t until the brothers had already been established with Disney that they branched out into glass-blowing, glass sculpting, and damascene. Of course now they have locations all over the world from Tokyo to Paris to Hong Kong. And of course – at Downtown Disney Marketplace.2

I thought I’d share some pictures here with you! Here is a photo tour of just some of the amazing items available in the store:

Disney Parks Discovery Series – Disneyland Paris Review from Erin Foster

Disneyland Paris
Disneyland Paris is our first stop in our Disney Parks Discovery series

Readers will have of course noticed that my primary focus here at ZannaLand is the Walt Disney World Resort. It is where I have enjoyed countless memories from childhood through present times. As much as I love everything about it, I also write about it because I have not had the good fortune to experience any of the other parks and resorts Disney has to offer. I hope to remedy this sad state of affairs as soon as I can but until that time, I figured I should not in turn, deprive you of the wonderful experiences out there. That’s where my friends come in.

I asked for some help in bringing an overview of the non-Disney World parks to my readers and first up is the lovely and intelligent Erin Foster, from the Walt Disney World Moms Panel, a self-admitted Disney Geek and in my opinion, a veritable font of Disney knowledge. Erin recently returned from her family’s first trip to the Disneyland Resort Paris. Once I got over wishing I could somehow stow away in their luggage, I asked her to share her experiences here with us. Je vous présente avec plaisir, Madame Foster!

For those of us on twitter and facebook, this is how we recognize AJ 😉

When first stumbling upon the Disney fan-site blog-o-sphere, one site stood out and instantly became a favorite. That would of course be the Disney Food Blog. I know I am not alone in loving this site and the wonderful person behind it, AJ Wolfe. It’s funny that since AJ has chosen to be for the most part completely anonymous on the internet, I actually spent the first 6 months or so I communicated with her, thinking she was a he! I actually think that’s a great testament to the power of her factual reporting and her blogging prowess. Of course, when I was lucky enough to meet AJ in person back in February, she couldn’t be a more stereotypically sweet and ladylike Southern lady! {Even though she’s technically a New Yorker, having only relocated to Texas a year ago – she’s just that charming!}

AJ was kind enough to let me post as a guest author on her site back when I was just getting started, and I appreciated that so much. Many of my blogging friends have contributed to her site as well, once again proving that there is no end to wonderful Disney food topics! I thought it’d be fun to get to know AJ a little better and discover some of the background behind her passions. So without further ado, here’s AJ —

Tip-toeing quietly in the footsteps of my friends on MainStGazette, ImagiNERDing, and TheDisneyFoodBlog, I’m pleased to bring you my version of a weekend wrap-up of Disney posts that caught my eye. I hope you enjoy the items as much as I did and as always, feel free to tell me your favorites from this week in the comments.

  • AJ from The Disney Food Blog confirms what we were all hoping for: The Wishes Dessert Party Returns March 28th!
  • Ryan shows us how things have changed in Epcot since 1984 and the Kodak Picture Spots shown on the park’s guidemap – as they look today – on the Main Street Gazette. While you’re there, check out his coverage of the directional signs of Animal Kingdom’s Asia.
  • Our pal Lou Mongello of WDW Radio tempts us all as he tours the snacks of Disney’s Hollywood Studios in search of the park’s best snack. I don’t think you’ll be disappointed!
  • On Yesterland, Werner Weiss discusses the urban legend of the Swan and Dolphin hotels being reversed – with some really cool photos in the piece. I loved this article since our wedding reception was held at the Dolphin (14 years ago this October eep!) these resorts have always held a special place in my Disney history.
  • And finally, in light of the recent announcement from Disney Parks unveiling their Premier Passport which covers admission to both Walt Disney World and Disneyland, Scott from DisneyBiz calculates exactly when this annual pass pays for itself in terms of park visits.

Happy reading and see you next week in ZannaLand!

DVC 101: The Ins, Outs, Ups and Downs of Discovering Disney’s Best Kept Secret

You know the old saying “write what you know” – well I can write about Disney till the cows come home, but there are some things I just know are better left to the experts. I thought it was time to bring in some of those experts and let them share their knowledge on subjects to which I might not otherwise do justice. In this case, I asked a wonderful twitter friend who goes by the handle KidaniKatie {aka Katie Siloac} to give our readers a rundown of DVC 101. I knew Katie was a DVC member (her username may have given that away) and I loved her site TheDVCLife.com so I thought it was a perfect place to start.

I know my family and I have wanted to become Disney Vacation Club members since its inception, way back when Old Key West was simply called Disney’s Vacation Club Resort and was the only option to buy into. It’s just not been in the cards for us to purchase, although we almost took the plunge a few years back when we did the tour and presentation when Kidani Village was being built. We still hope to be members some day soon, especially with our family of five (six when my mom comes with us) it would make perfect sense. But – is it really right for us? Is it right for you? What exactly do all the points and home resorts and…well, I should really just let Katie tell you. Please give her a warm welcome and just maybe she’ll come back and tell us other fun stuff about Disney!!

The Disney Community – The Magic is in YOU!

Faithful readers may have noticed a gap in updates here in ZannaLand. Never fear – I have lots of fun stuff lined up. I’ve just been working on some behind-the-scenes (or backstage to use a Disney term) things on the site and trying to make it better organized for visitors that may be looking for specific posts or planning help. In addition (outside of running after my 3 kids), I’ve been working on another page within the site to list some other places to get your Disney fix online. Basically a blog roll, as is very common on other sites – however I really want to make this a lot more than just a listing of links. And here’s why…{you knew there had to be a story in here right?}

I know I’ve talked a bit in the past on here about the how and why of wanting to write about Disney. To go into a little more detail, it was really because of twitter and the amazing Disney community that lives there. A year ago, I was just a fan connecting with other Disney fans on twitter and discovering that there existed so many sites and blogs about Disney. When the thought occurred to me to change the focus of my blog here to one about Walt Disney World, the support was overwhelming. I never heard a “oh, don’t bother, there are 10,000+ Disney sites out there!” or “it’s already been done, what could you possibly bring to the table?” even though those were exactly the doubts I was having. Quite the contrary, I received cheers and open arms waiting to help. And trust me – I asked for help – a LOT.

Disney Podcasts 101 – All You Need to Know About Great Disney Podcasts!

Many of you found me on this site through twitter and shared in my journey to the Walt Disney World Moms Panel last year. During that process, I shared quite a bit about my Disney background and experiences. I am and always have been confident in my knowledge of Disney history and even a bit of trivia, and my desire to share that history is really what gave me the push to write about Disney here. That said – I am the FIRST to admit that I do not know it all. More than that, there are some areas of Disney fandom that I am just completely clueless about! Luckily, one of the side-effects of Disney obsession is an incessant desire to LEARN MORE about the parks, resorts, attractions, history, behind-the-scenes info – any and everything!

Being a Florida resident for the better part of the last 15 years and a cast member a few times, my knowledge was gained just by going to the parks and experiencing all the changes and history – as it happened. I realized during the Moms Panel application process that there is a whole other world of Disney fans out there who have completely different skill sets regarding our favorite place.
