Lagoon Slide TowerI’ve been a fan of the Nickelodeon Suites Hotel since it first opened (in fact, I stayed there while it was under construction waaay before Zannaland existed). I think the combination of a family suite with bunk beds and a separate adult bedroom, mixed with SO many fun activities and characters that kids know and love, is just perfect for any family visiting the Orlando area.

I recently had the opportunity to attend the Nick Hotel’s new Bikini Bottom Breakfast and see their brand new 4-D movie experience featuring the whole SpongeBob gang. It was a super fun day and I can’t wait to take my kids back to see it first hand. The character breakfast is not your average breakfast with characters coming to the table and that’s it – here they dance, they sing, it’s action-packed and fun for all. The breakfast buffet and omelet station was a great complement to the fun.

The 4-D movie  – The Great Jelly Rescue – was better than some I’ve seen in theme parks! The interactive “4-D” level of sights, smells, and action was spot on and the computer animated version of Bikini Bottom and its inhabitants were enjoyable for all. The Nickelodeon Suites Hotel has a bunch of new things for this summer:

  • Make a splash at SpongeBob’s Bikini Bottom Breakfast. Hula your way to the breakfast buffet and hang out with SpongeBob SquarePants and some of your other favorite deep-sea dwellers. It’s high tide at the Nicktoons Cafe, so catch a wave and come on by! Check out the photos of the breakfast below:

  • Discover Dora’s Friendship Fiesta as Dora takes us on an amazing adventure, exploring everything about friendship on our way to the Meet & Greet Fiesta. With Boots, Team Umizoomi’s Milli and Geo, and other friends, you’ll help find the way to this one of a kind celebration.
  • Dive into SpongeBob SquarePants 4-D: The Great Jelly Rescue! The 4-D Attraction joins SpongeBob with his friends in tow on a rollicking adventure when the villainous Plankton abducts all the Jellyfish with his pollution-belching contraption.  It is up to SpongeBob SquarePants to save the day, free the Jellyfish and destroy Plankton’s terrible machine.  See how SpongeBob’s big heart puts him oceans above the rest! It’s all in digital 3-D with awesome 4-D effects like bubbly bubbles, windy wind and more sensory surprises.

The grand opening of the new 4-D movie The Great Jelly Rescue!

Bubbles and more make this movie a must-see!

There’s always something fun happening here, and I was really impressed with the property and especially the “mall” area with different food options (including dinner with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles), an arcade and shops,  the 4-D movie and of course, SLIME! Definitely add the Nick Hotel to your list of must-sees when you visit Orlando! Here are some photos of the suites:

Kings Bowl Rolls Into Orlando With Flair, Food, and Fun!

Kings Bowl OrlandoLast week a new kid on the block opened up over on I-Drive – Kings Bowl, a luxury bowling and dining establishment, hailing from the great city of Boston (proud Boston girl here!) opened its doors to those looking for a fresh spin on a classic pastime. As seems to be the norm with these new, deluxe bowling alleys, the emphasis is on great dining, great drinks, and a place for adults to kick back and enjoy.

Kings Bowl features a really fun atmosphere with a definite adult vibe. 60 Big screen HD TV’s show the latest sports action, two separate 40-seat bars offer unique alcoholic creations and two tables over in the dining area actually feature kegs IN the table, chilled to a perfect temperature, the spinning tap allows you to choose up to 4 of your favorite brews and serve yourself. Truly a unique draw and something I think every beer drinker will want to try. One of the bars is located in an outdoor, climate-controlled patio, perfect for the summer months (or most of the year) here in Orlando.

The food at Kings Bowl was incredible. Definitely not what you’d expect at just any old bowling alley, and I dare say it rivals most dining spots around town. The Steak Tips were my favorite, but the Pulled Pork BBQ and the Buffalo Chicken Wontons were delicious too. I can totally see folks just hanging out here for the food, drinks and atmosphere, but the bowling offers another element to keep the party going. Be sure to try the Fizzy Lifting Drink if you’re up for something stronger!

Speaking of parties, Kings Bowl has two private available to book, accommodating 50 or 100 people. One features a closed-in glass walled area, where you can bowl and have access to the outside bocce court. The other opens onto the billiard and shuffleboard area. This area is also home to the VIP room, where two lanes can be curtained off, with a private back entrance to the building for any celebrities wanting to bowl a few frames. There are 22 full-sized lanes to test your skill on, and yes, there are bumpers for the kids (or grown-ups).

The lighting and decor is swanky and cool

I think Kings Bowl is a wonderful addition to I-Drive and the kitchy, 50’s feel to the design makes it a fun experience for all. The place switches over to adults-only (21+) after 6, so leave the kiddos at home after then. Perfect for a date night, girls night or guys night out – there’s something for everyone! Kings Bowl is the first partner to open up in the I-Drive Live project, an area of the burgeoning I-Drive District which will feature a new Madame Tussaud’s wax museum, Sea Life Aquarium,  giant observation wheel, multiple shops, restaurants, and more.

SeaWorld’s Aquatica Water Park’s 5th Birthday Celebration

Aquatica birthday cakeAquatica Orlando celebrated its fifth birthday last weekend, which included a celebration for guests who were in attendance.

In light of the theme, $5 merchandise specials were offered all day that included clothing, Aquatica-themed glasses, and more. There was a special birthday party held in the afternoon with amazing animal ambassador meet and greets and special treats, plus a live DJ raffled off prizes for future visits with Cabanas and all-day-dining. What a great present that was from Aquatica!

Aquatica Vice President Bryan Nadeau addressed the crowd thanking them for making Aquatica a hit over the past five years; he also lead the group in the Happy Birthday song.

Rā whānau is the Maori way to say “Happy Birthday” — Rā whānau, Aquatica!

Dolphin PlungeFrom high-speed water slides and exhilarating wave pools, to tranquil beaches and the remarkable animal habitats that are the hallmark of SeaWorld, Aquatica delights all ages and interests. This waterpark is home to some of the world’s most thrilling water rides, featuring 38 slides, rivers and lagoons and 84,000 square feet of sparkling white, sandy beaches. Aquatica’s exclusive attractions promise unlimited fun, sending guests on amazing undersea adventures and through breathtaking animal exhibits.

My family visited Aquatica for the first time last weekend and had a blast. It’s definitely a water park for the adventurous type with most all of the slides being very high speed and having at least some portion in total darkness. (I’m a scaredy cat and those weren’t my favorite, but there are a few that aren’t in the dark too.) I think the favorite for everyone in our group was Roa Rapids, which is a fast-current not-so-lazy river, where you don’t even need an inner tube to be propelled along the stream and enjoy the scenery.

We also checked out the Waterstone Grill for lunch, which had really great food, and made time to just relax and enjoy the sandy beach and catch some rays. All in all, it was a great day of fun. If you are able to do the add-on from your day at SeaWorld, or visit with the package from Discovery Cove, I’d definitely say head over for some splashy fun. For more info, head to Aquatica’s site.

REVIEW: Les Misèrables – a Triumph from Stage to Screen

24 December 2012 by Suzannah Otis 3 Comments

Les Miserables posterLes Misérables is one of the first stage productions I saw as a teenager in high school, after having grown up seeing musicals and other shows with my family. I’ve mentioned before how my mother was in the Corps de Ballet at Radio City Music Hall in NYC, and a professional ballerina for most of her life. Because of her background, I was lucky enough to grow up with the culture of the theatre and saw many shows as they’d tour in Boston, as well as summer stock and other productions. Just the act of going to a show was, itself, something that shaped my childhood. Getting dressed up, traveling into the city, walking through the theatre district of Boylston and Tremont streets in Boston, going out to dinner before or after the show, feeling like a grown-up with all the other adults there to see the shows, it was a truly wonderful and life-changing experience that is part of who I am today.

After returning to the Boston area to finish high school, I saw Phantom of the Opera, followed by Les Misérables. I loved it so much I had to see it again right away. It became the show I saw the most and still is to this day. The music moved me so, combined with the story (what girl isn’t obsessed with Paris at some point?), and of course, the amazing staging of the show itself. Needless to say, I’ve been more than a little excited to see Les Misérables come to the big screen as close to the stage show as possible. The clips I saw prior to watching the film were all just incredible; haunting, alluring, drawing you in, just like the stage show. The film did not disappoint in that regard.

I did not do much research before seeing this film version of Les Misérables, but what I did know is that it was produced by Cameron Mackintosh, who produced the original stage production, and directed by Tom Hooper, who had done The King’s Speech, most famously. Hooper did something truly unique for the filming of the musical, he had the actors sing their parts live as the cameras were rolling, rather than lip-synching to pre-recorded songs. By doing this, Hooper believed this method allowed the actors to have emotional control over their songs, noting that when Anne Hathaway sings ‘I Dreamed a Dream,’ if she needs to take a moment to have a thought or show an emotion before she sings it, she can do that. And after witnessing this first hand, I can tell you it was the right decision.

Anne Hathaway as Fantine

Now, to the film itself. If you do not want spoilers, save this part for after you’ve seen the film. Obviously, the story is well-known at this point, but I’ll go into specific details from the movie which could be considered spoilers if you want to be surprised. For those who aren’t familiar with the Les Misérables story here’s a quick synopsis before the review:

Set against the backdrop of 19th-century France, Les Misérables tells an enthralling story of broken dreams and unrequited love, passion, sacrifice and redemption—a timeless testament to the survival of the human spirit. Hugh Jackman plays ex-prisoner Jean Valjean, hunted for decades by the ruthless policeman Javert (Russell Crowe) after he breaks parole. When Valjean agrees to care for factory worker Fantine’s (Anne Hathaway) young daughter, Cosette, their lives change forever.

Film Title: Les Misérables

The opening scene is one of the most powerful I have seen on screen. I truly did not even recognize Hugh Jackman as he sang his parts and acted with the other condemned men doing hard labor for their crimes. It was an excellent set-up to the antagonistic relationship between Jean Valjean and Javert.

We then move into the struggle for Valjean to find his place in the world that wants nothing to do with him. Refused at every turn, Valjean finally receives shelter and care from an elderly bishop who takes him in and treats him like an honored guest. The bishop is played by the original Jean Valjean in the stage production, the amazing Colm Wilkinson. It was wonderful to see him on screen and in this story once more. When Valjean receives the second chance from the bishop and is faced with the life-altering decision to remain as himself or create a new life and leave his past behind, Hugh Jackman’s performance is Oscar-worthy without a doubt. The emotion is palpable and to say it is moving just doesn’t seem strong enough. At this point, I realized that this film version of Les Misérables was not going to be about the singing, but rather the story, the individual characters purging their emotions before our eyes and telling this tale with great care and love.

When the next scene opens with ‘At the End of the Day’ and the music, the staging, the costumes are all spot on, I just sat in my seat with a giant grin on my face, seeing the story I loved so much essentially coming to life before my eyes. The citizens were singing out in the open, under a grey sky, with the bustling of the 19th century France enveloping the singers. It was wonderful for a fan of the original musical.

There were a few changes from the original show, most of which I did not have any problems with. With Fantine, ‘I Dreamed a Dream’ is sung after she hits bottom, selling her necklace and hair and teeth and committing to the life of a prostitute in order to provide for her daughter Cosette. I thought this worked and made sense and her performance makes much more sense after being so beaten down by her experiences prior to singing the most famous song from the production.

The Thenardiers

There were a few other differences; we don’t hear all of ‘Little People’, nor all of the Thénardiers various songs. However my thoughts on that are that unlike the stage production where you truly need that comic relief and breaking up of the misery that’s occurring in the film, you sort of need that continuity to keep you in the story with these characters without being chopped up by comedy right and left. We still get ‘Master of the House’ and the antics of the Thénardiers, and I think the choices were founded. I did miss ‘Turning’ at the end of the battle scenes, as it’s one of my favorites, but we did hear a few lines from it. Nothing is missing completely from the stage version, they are just sometimes subtle nods vs. full performances.

There is also a new song, written just for the film by original Les Miserables composer Claude-Michel Schönberg and lyricist Alain Boublil. The song, ‘Suddenly,’ definitely fits within the film and the scene in which it is used, but something about it seemed a bit off to me, lyrically. The rest of the score is so rich, lyrically, each word seems to hold some important key to the story at hand, giving you insight to the characters and pushing the plot forward. ‘Suddenly,’ however, seemed a little thin, and just, there. Still, it’s a pretty song and does fill in some gaps in the transformation of Valjean from mayor and factory owner to substitute father.

Russell Crowe as Javert

The one performance I had a problem with was Russell Crowe. I feel he was a weak choice for Javert and even though he’s in a band, I felt his singing was not up to what I’ve come to expect from the relentless inspector who is completely overcome by his need to find and arrest Valjean. While his singing lacked power and, for me, was distracting enough to detract from the film, it was not enough to make me come away from the screening I attended disappointed. Javert’s final scene was one I was most concerned with translating to screen, and while the actions themselves were well-done, Russell Crowe just did not make the connection I needed to feel for Javert in any way. That said, the other excellent performances overshadow the few that aren’t up to par, in my opinion, and the film on a whole is just an amazing concentration of story and song. [Update: after some reflection on Javert as portrayed by Russel Crowe, and listening to his songs again, I’ve come to a new understanding of him as a character. In the stage production, Javert is overtly ruthless, a man of the law, who strives to hunt down and bring Valjean to justice at any cost. In the film, Javert is someone we actually do feel for. He’s still upholding the law and out to get Valjean, but his songs and actions portray him as someone lacking his own sense of self and security. When he sings ‘Stars’ it’s as if he’s trying to convince himself, rather than the audience, of his duty and mission. So it’s a different Javert than I’m used to, but he did grow on me.]

I lost count of the number of times I cried during the movie, which is not unusual for me, but I was actually worried going in that the film would not elicit that response. I was wrong and cannot wait to go through the emotional wringer again when I head back to see Les Misérables with my oldest children, who are also into musical theatre, much to my delight!

I think fans of the stage production of Les Misérables will be overall pleased with the film adaptation and hopefully enjoy the few nods to the original which are found within the movie. Those who have never heard of Les Misérables prior to this will most likely be moved by the story, music and characters and I hope the movie’s success translates into more touring of the stage show. At the end of the day (pardon the pun), I feel that is what the true purpose of these films should be, to spark interest in theatre, musicals, and live performances; something everyone should get to experience in their lives, no matter their age. Les Misérables succeeds in this regard as it certainly made me want to take my children to see it live and begin fostering that love of theatre as well.

Splitsville Luxury Lanes-Bowling Dining & More at Downtown Disney

Splitsville OrlandoThere’s a new kingpin in town, Downtown Disney that is! After much anticipation, Splitsville luxury lanes is set to open Wednesday, December 19 in Downtown Disney’s West Side. Splitsville is bowling like you’ve never experienced before (unless you’ve visited one of their other successful locations across the country) – all of the fun of bowling with friends and family, mixed with great food and an even better atmosphere.

Set in the former Virgin Megastore building, Splitsville has completely redesigned the building and it is a marvel to see first hand. The process at Splitsville is a little different; you sign up for a bowling lane and tell them your shoe size and they bring the shoes to you and set you up in a lane. Then you get 1.5 hours of bowling and can enjoy drinks and dining while you bowl. If you’d like to just hang out for the music or food, that’s cool too. The second floor of Splitsville in Downtown Disney is only open to those 21+ after 10pm. Regular hours are from 10am-2am, 7 days a week. Pricing varies based on when you go, but for now it is $20 per person for an hour and a half of bowling, including shoe rental, during the peak hours of 5-10pm. If you’d like to bring your whole family, you are welcome to bowl downstairs where there is no age limit – drinks and food are still available downstairs as well – including a sushi bar!

After experiencing the vibe at Splitsville in Downtown Disney twice now, I am excited for the potential this brand has to invigorate and enliven the Downtown Disney atmosphere. I know there is a great need for things to do at Walt Disney World “after hours” since most things close at midnight or before, so this seems like a natural fit for couples and solo travelers visiting the World, as well as, of course, locals. Whether there will be discounts for locals, cast members and annual passholders remains to be seen, but I am sure Splitsville will be a great fit and personally look forward to the future with possible bowling leagues and fun get-togethers among friends.

The decor and theming in the Downtown Disney Splitsville is just fantastic. They have kept the retro 50’s bowling theme going with shiny red and black vinyl and mid-century modern lighting everywhere, along with adding some touches specific to our location, like Orlando-specific landmarks and nods to our orange grove history. In addition, downstairs is an absolutely amazing mural designed after the 1970’s merchandise bags which Walt Disney World history buffs love so much. It is just a perfect fit and a detail which did not go unnoticed or unappreciated by the many fans who visited the lanes before its official opening. Well done, Splitsville and Disney!

In addition to the nightly bowling, billiards, dancing and dining, Splitsville Orlando will be offering New Year’s Eve 21+ packages, with ($175 per person) or without ($100 per person) bowling which will include food options, drinks and Champagne with a reserved table for 3.5 hours. You can contact [email protected] or call 407-938-PINS for more information and reservations. You can also make lane and special event reservations online for birthdays and more.

One of my favorite parts of living in Orlando are the wonderful holiday events and happenings. Gaylord Palms is an absolutely gorgeous resort and it becomes a sparkling jewel for the holidays. My family and I love making ICE! an annual tradition, where over 2 million pounds of ice are carved by skilled Chinese artisans, with a new theme for each holiday season. This year, it’s “Merry Madagascar” and all of your favorites are there; King Julien, Alex, Marty, Gloria, Melman, and of course, MORT! There are SO many amazing things to see at ICE!, I think I took over 100 photos. However, rather than show you everything, I want to share my top 5 scenes, and hopefully entice you to get over to Gaylord Palms and see the rest in person!

My Top 5 Favorite Scenes at Gaylord Palms ICE! – Merry Madagascar

5. Frozen Coconuts!

Gaylord Palms ICE! Merry Madagascar
This is in my top 5 not because of the adorable Mort on King Julien’s lap but because of the coconuts to the right. They are just so cute!

But there is much more to the holidays at Gaylord Palms than just ICE! Within the ICE! area, there are also special character greeting photo ops and Gingy’s Gingerbread Decorating, as well as a huge selection of holiday and themed merchandise and a cafe serving holiday treats. In addition, the main atrium lobby has breathtaking Christmas decorations and a nightly Christmas show called Luminescence – featuring The Edge Effect, and the Polar Bear Pursuit Scavenger Hunt. I always love any chance I get to hang out at the Gaylord Palms Resort – it is like another little self-contained world. Actually, there isn’t anything little about Gaylord Palms. From the moment you walk in the lobby, the space is awe-inspiring and the attention to detail and theming just gorgeous. I think I could spend all day just wandering around and exploring the Florida-themed sections of the hotel (and they realize this and offer kids scavenger hunts as a result!). The rooms and dining are just as fabulous, making it a place a family or couple could truly escape and never leave the grounds for a mini-vacation.

Gaylord Palms knows how to entertain families as well. They have two holiday packages coming up, one for Halloween featuring Shrek and Kung Fu Panda  – who wouldn’t want to trick-or-treat around 4.5 acres of hotel gardens?! Of course, their amazing Christmas experiences such as ICE!, decorations, shows and more! The official information follows – I can’t recommend the Gaylord Palms Resort enough, it’s just beautiful!

 …

Package guests can dress up in their most spooktacular costumes; trick-or-treat around the resort’s 4.5 acres of gardens; participate in a kids’costume contest with prizes; make ooey, gooey Swamp Sludge; dive into fun at the Madagascar Crack-A-Lackin’ Pool Party and much more ghoulish fun!

Scared Shrekless Family Fun at Gaylord Palms offers families a safe and weather controlled environment to celebrate the Halloween holiday. ICE! featuring DreamWorks’ Merry Madagascar

Celebrating its 10th year, ICE! is back and features an all-new awe-inspiring tribute to the unforgettable DreamWorks’ Animation TV classic Merry Madagascar. Guests can relive the story of how Alex the Lion and his friends saved Christmas after Santa and his reindeer crash onto the island of Madagascar.

Thrill-seekers can take a trip down one of four, two-story ice slides. With more than 20,000 square feet of exciting hand-carved sculptures made of 2 million pounds of ice, the frosty 9-degree bliss of ICE! is Florida’s favorite frigid Christmas tradition. A team of 40 talented artisans from Harbin, China, spend more than a month in Kissimmee creating this one-of-a-kind attraction.

While visiting Gaylord Palms to take in the excitement of ICE!, guests can also amplify their Christmas experience with one of these special events available FREE of charge:

  • Majestic Christmas Tree Lighting — Guests looking for a more traditional treat can enjoy Gaylord Palms’ famous tree-lighting ceremony, complete with singers, carols, lights and the star of the show, a massive 54-foot-tall majestic Christmas tree! It towers over the St. Augustine atrium, waiting for the special moment to light up and cast holiday cheer on guests.
  • LIVE Stage Shows — As part of the holiday lineup, Gaylord Palms offers live stage entertainment, including the spirited Luminescence Christmas show, throughout the Christmas season. Shows take place in the Emerald Bay Plaza, and guests are welcome to attend, free of charge!
  • Polar Bear Pursuit Scavenger Hunt — Guests can take a joyful jaunt throughout the indoor atriums to spot cleverly hidden polar bears. Answers are entered online to be eligible to win a grand prize.

The festivities don’t stop there! Guests can also participate in a few of their favorite things (additional charges apply):

  • ShrekFeast Interactive Character Breakfast — Kids will love becoming an honorary Ogre and joining Shrek and friends for a fairytale feast fit for a king. Tableside hugs and photos included! This experience features a Magic Fountain bubbling over with delicious chocolate potions and Shrek-shaped waffles with syrup.
  • Gingy’s Gingerbread Decorating — This fun, sticky, interactive decorating tradition just got a whole lot sweeter! Hosted by Gingy, the most famous of all Gingerbread men, you can choose from several different design options. After you’ve decorated to your heart’s content (don’t forget the gum drop buttons!), make your way to meet Gingy for a heartwarming hug that you can capture with your own camera.

The best way to benefit from all that Gaylord Palms has to offer is to book a room and become immersed in the splendor of Christmas. Guests seeking to jingle all the way into their holiday hoopla can purchase special “Christmassy DreamWorks Experience” packages starting at $189 per room per night!

Watch Ashley Eckstein’s Video Diary from Star Wars Celebration VI!

When I attended Star Wars Celebration VI last month, the highlight was seeing Ashley Eckstein in all of her Her Universe glory. She was doing a photo shoot for fangirls to model their Her Universe shirts, and if they didn’t own one, she would provide one for the shoot – so nice! After checking out the Her Universe booth and speaking to Ashley’s wonderful husband, 2-time World Series winner and MVP David Eckstein, he let us know Ashley was upstairs at the photo shoot and we headed up to see the fans in action. It was great to see Ashley interacting with her loyal fans and see how she’s inspired them not only with her fashion designs, but to make their own skirts and dresses and hair accessories as well! I was lucky enough to be persuaded to pose for a photo in my own Her Universe shirt, and have Ashley join me as well.

Me with Ashley, she’s always so gracious!

While we were there, Imagineer Jason Surrell was on hand directing and recording Ashley’s video diaries for the weekend’s events. It was cool to see some Disney/Star Wars/Ashley cross-over since she’s always such a great part of the Star Wars Weekends at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. Here are what Ashley and Jason had to say in today’s press release:

Ashley Eckstein at Celebration VI

“I’ve never been good at keeping a written diary and I wanted to capture the events and memories of Celebration VI for myself and the fans in a different way,” said Eckstein. “With social media being the way it is today, a video diary seemed like the best way to cover CVI.”

The video diary, directed by Jason Surrell, a screenwriter and Senior Show Writer for Walt Disney Imagineering and edited by Studio Say So, an Orlando-based video production company, is a collaborative effort with Eckstein. “I was absolutely thrilled when Ashley asked me to direct her video diary at Star Wars Celebration VI,” said Surrell.  “After directing Ashley and her fellow Clone Wars cast members in Behind the Force at Disney’s Star Wars Weekends for so many years, I knew that there’s a whole other world out there that people typically don’t get to see.  So I’m hoping that our series of video diaries will truly give Star Wars fans a peek behind the curtain at all the fascinating and truly funny things that happen when these people get together. I’ve never been happier to be a fly on the wall.  We’re going to take you onstage, backstage and everywhere in between.”

The complete video diary is now available at StarWars.com, where you can watch all the galactic fun for yourself. It was a fun weekend for any level of Star Wars fan!

Saturday my daughter and I were invited to experience Raglan Road Pub’s Great Irish Hooley, or celebration. Nestled between Downtown Disney’s Pleasure Island and Marketplace, the Great Irish Hooley is central Florida’s first boutique Irish festival, taking place from Friday to Monday this Labor Day weekend.

Raglan Road Pub is always a favorite for my family, featuring great food mixed with authentic Irish musicians and dancers throughout the day and night. The Great Irish Hooley enhanced all of that fun, with more bands, more dancing and lessons, and of course, great food – with no cover charge. It was wonderful to learn the stories behind the Irish dances being demonstrated along with the music and edible delights!

Here are some photo highlights of our experience on Saturday:

Raglan Road Hosts Central Florida’s First Boutique Irish Festival: ‘Great Irish Hooley’

It is no secret that Raglan Road Irish Pub and Restaurant is one of my favorite spots at Downtown Disney here in Orlando. I’ve always been a fan of their amazing Chef Kevin Dundon‘s creations as well as the great live music and atmosphere the location offers. Having grown up outside of Boston, the granddaughter of Irish immigrants, I’ve also always had a great love in my heart for Irish music and dancing. Many high school friends took part in Irish step-dancing and I was always amazed by their syncopated movements and talent. Now Raglan Road brings some great Irish culture to all of us here in Central Florida, with their first ever boutique Irish festival called “The Great Irish Hooley” taking place from August 31-September 3 at Downtown Disney.

Here is all the official information about what exactly a Hooley is and what to expect there:

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. – Labor Day weekend guests at Downtown Disney Pleasure Island can eat, drink, dance and celebrate during Central Florida’s first boutique Irish festival — The Great Irish Hooley — August 31 through Sept. 3.

A traditional Irish social celebration, the “Hooley” combines music ranging from traditional to rock tunes with entertainment and interactive fun for the whole family.  Raglan Road’s Great Irish Hooley will make the long weekend memorable with a mix of great Irish bands, Irish Dance Workshops for anyone in the family, structured set dancing known as the Ceili (pronounced kay-lee), Celtic face-painting Saturday through Monday and authentic food and beverages for all.

“At last, Orlando has its own boutique Irish festival like those found back home in Ireland and in certain other U.S. cities,” says John Cooke, a founding partner of Raglan Road Irish Pub & Restaurant.  “This unique Irish festival will be jam packed with the best of Irish music and entertainment outside of Ireland.”

The four-day party kicks off Friday, August 31 at 5 p.m. and continues through midnight Monday, Sept 3.  The Great Irish Hooley entertainment lineup includes six top Irish bands and a troupe of acclaimed dancers:

o   Full Set, a popular Irish band that released its successful debut album last year.  The band plays the festival Friday through Monday to begin a U.S. tour that includes the Milwaukee Irish Fest.

Raglan Road Great Irish Hooley 'Full Set 2
This Irish band begins its U.S. tour at the Hooley — they recently released their hit debut album

o   Elevation, the U2 Tribute Band.  Elevation will play the pub stage Saturday and a full show under the Florida sky on the patio stage Sunday evening.

o   Creel, Raglan Road’s popular house band, will play all weekend.

o   The Raglan Rogues, here from Dublin with their energetic expression of Irish folk and traditional tunes, will play Thursday through Monday.

Raglan Rogues
This Irish band, The Raglan Rogues, is performing now every Weds. through Saturday evenings on the Raglan Road patio. They are slated to appear at the Hooley, as well, but will return to Ireland in October.

o   Danny Burns brings his unique blend of Irish ballads and contemporary Irish music to Raglan Friday through Monday.

o   Johnny “Snaggs” Norton is a renowned Dublin entertainer in the tradition of the great Irish folk and ballad groups who has toured worldwide with Riverdance.  His performances Saturday through Monday include sing-along songs from the great Traditional Irish Songbook.

o   The Raglan Road Irish Dancers, the resident six-strong troupe of champion Irish dancers plucked from the stages of the most famed Irish dance shows, perform throughout the weekend.

Raglan Road Dancers
Guests can watch this amazing troupe of award-winner dancers almost every evening at Raglan Road. They’ll be part of the Irish Dance Workshops with Ronan McCormack

On Saturday, Sunday and Monday, guests can participate in Irish Dance Workshops — “From Our Roots to Riverdance” — with renowned Irish dancer and choreographer Ronan McCormack of the original Riverdance cast and the Raglan Road Dancers.Ronan will chart and demonstrate the origins and traditional styles of Irish Dance through to the contemporary styles of dance made famous by Riverdance.  And on each of those three afternoons, guests can step up for a two-hour Ceili (kay-lee) – a traditional music and structured set-dancing event that was the precursor to today’s popular country line dancing.

Throughout the Hooley, guests can belly up to one of Raglan Road’s 130-year-old imported-from-Ireland bars or grab a table for authentic fare by Irish celebrity chef Kevin Dundon.  The restaurant, a Diners’ Choice 2012 award winner, is known for its beer-battered fish and chips, as well as its Shepherd’s pie with a contemporary twist, delectable seafood, Kevin’s Heavenly Ham and other popular entrees.  Desserts like the Bread & Butter Pudding and the decadently chocolate Dunbrody Kiss are just as popular.  Raglan Road also offers gluten-free items including scallops, fish and chips, calamari, onion rings and pasta dishes.

Owned and operated by Irish partners and celebrity chef Kevin Dundon – famous for his five-star hotel and cookery school in Ireland – Raglan Road features traditional Irish dishes and new creations with a Celtic twist.  The restaurant’s warm interior of aged walnut and mahogany woods from old Irish bars and churches was built in Ireland and shipped to Orlando.  Live entertainment nightly includes Irish house band Creel (Monday through Saturday) and Irish duo Johnny and Justin (Sundays) plus The Raglan Road Irish Dancers perform seven nights a week.  Lunch is served 11 a.m.-3 p.m.; Dinner 3-11 p.m.; Bar menu 11 p.m.-late.  Raglan Road Irish Pub & Restaurant is located on Pleasure Island at Downtown Disney in the Walt Disney World Resort, 1640 E. Buena Vista Dr., Lake Buena Vista, Fla.  Visit RaglanRoad.com or call 407/938-0300.
