Ghirardelli Chocolate Experience – A Chocoholic’s Dream

In addition to the new Terra vegan booth and the Chase Visa Lounge, also new at the 2012 Epcot International Food and Wine Festival is the Ghirardelli Chocolate Experience. When I heard the title of this exhibit, I was thrilled. Chocolate. Experience? Sign me up!

Located inside the Festival Center in the former Wonders of Life pavilion, you can smell the sweet aroma of chocolate as you approach the Ghirardelli area. At the entrance, Cast Members offer you a Ghirardelli sample, just as they do at the Downtown Disney location. Yum. Inside you can learn about the process of making chocolate, from the “bean to the bar” and also purchase a small cup of Drinking Chocolate. It is basically like drinking melted chocolate chips, and heavenly. Wine is also available for purchase.

In the back of the Ghirardelli area is a fun display of amazing artistic creations by Disney chefs, made entirely of chocolate. Be sure to check them out! The Ghirardelli Chocolate Experience is open daily from 9:00 a.m. through park close.

A Vegetarian And a Tween Visit Epcot’s Food and Wine Festival

Wise and delicious advice from an Epcot sign

That may sound like the opening to a strange Disney joke, but really, it’s just how a recent visit to Epcot’s 17th annual International Food & Wine Festival went. There are a couple of weeks left in Epcot’s Food & Wine Festival which has been running since September 28 and continues through November 12, 2012.

This year has been chock full of delicious international cuisine as usual, and some new tastes this year too, including the first all-vegan booth, Terra. I recently had a chance to explore some options as a new vegetarian and was surprised at what I could still enjoy.

At Terra, I tried all of the options and found the Trick’n Chick’n Curry with Basmati Rice and Chili Colorado with House-Made Chips and Cashew Cheese to be delicious options, even for my meat-eating friends. I will fully admit to “meatless meat” getting a bad reputation, but the Trick’n Chick’n is so close to the real thing, it made me pause and wonder, “what IS this made from?” It’s that good. The sauce was spicy (which I love) and delicious. The chili is made with “beef-less beef tips” and you really are hard pressed to tell the difference. Great new additions this year.

Some of my other favorites were found at the Greece booth, one of my standbys. I have always loved Spanakopita and this year was no different. I also enjoyed the Greek Salad with Pita Bread, always yummy. New this season was the Griddled Greek Cheese with Pistachios and Honey. Sounds like an odd combo, but it worked together wonderfully and was a great snack item. I also discovered in Poland a delicious mushroom and cheese on toast dish called Zapiekanki-Toasted Mushroom, Caramelized Onion and Cheese Bread with House Made Ketchup. It was really too much for one person, definitely big enough to share.

Speaking of sharing, my daughter ordered the Ravioli di Formaggio All’emiliana (Baked Cheese Ravioli, Creamy Beef Bolognese, Parmesan, Mozzarella) in Italy and it was a huge portion. Great value and she loved it. Her other favorites were the California Roll in Japan and the Milk Chocolate Créme Brûlée in France, yearly must-haves for her. This year, she tried the Bailey’s Chocolate Lava Cake from Ireland too. That’s perhaps the best part of the Food & Wine Festival, the fun international meal you can make out of stopping for tastes here and there, around the World Showcase promenade.

In the past, I have been hesitant to bring my kids to an evening at Food & Wine, because it has become a “drinking around the world” event for many people, to the point of excess. However, I recently went, on a Friday night, with 10 Girl Scouts, and we all had a wonderful time. We were insulated in our own little group and were able to avoid any unpleasantry that can arise when large groups of folks are combined with large amounts of alcohol. That’s not to say those groups aren’t there, but you can choose to ignore them and still have a wonderful time.

I haven’t even touched on the wonderful seminars, classes and sessions that take place each year at the Festival. Be sure to check out the Festival Center next to Mission Space and Ellen’s Energy Adventure for more information, and fun Festival merchandise too. The merchandise was especially top-notch this year. Also new this year is the Chase Lounge, inside the Festival Center, where Disney Chase Visa cardholders can relax and have a refreshment in between their Epcot adventures. Right before the Chase Lounge is the Ghirardelli Chocolate Experience, where you can try drinking chocolate, a chocoholic’s dream! You can find out SO much more about the Food & Wine Festival seminars, menus and basically everything you need to know at the Disney Food Blog’s Food & Wine pages too.

REVIEW: Wreck-It Ralph Is a Game-Changing Masterpiece From Disney Animation

Wreck-It Ralph I will admit, I fell in love with Wreck-It Ralph before I even saw one clip from the movie. We first heard about it at the Disney D23 Expo in Anaheim in August of 2011. When I heard it was an 8-bit game bad guy that traveled to other video games, I was instantly hooked. Being an Atari child, I remember like it was yesterday the Christmas morning when my big brother got his Atari 2600 and our lives were changed forever. Even though it was his present, I spent hours, way too close to the t.v., playing Q*bert, Pitfall, E.T., Pac Man, and Yars Revenge (which I never did understand the point of), among countless others. More than that, at the time my father was the general manager of a restaurant which had a lounge containing several table-top arcade games. Centipede became MY game and I’d sit, amid the smoking and drinking, just to better my score (things were different in the 80’s kids). So you see, Wreck-It Ralph had my heart before the trailers even came out. Once I saw not one, but two preview screenings (thanks to the Disney Parks Blog and a media screening via my own blog), I was not disappointed.

Wreck-It Ralph is a triumph of story, characters, and animation. The story is one we can all related to; feeling under-appreciated and trapped in your current position and willing to do anything to change your situation. The characters, although a mix of existing video games and the new games created for the film, all work perfectly together and you truly feel for the members of Bad Guys Anonymous, or the out of work Q*bert creatures. You might think it difficult to give 2-dimensional video game characters a backstory, but Disney does it and does it well.

The animation is, in a word, breathtaking. The attention to detail within the Game Central areas, the fun, polished 8-bit setting of Fix-It Felix and Niceland, and the sharp, HD animation within Hero’s Duty all just work together flawlessly. And then, we have Sugar Rush. I, like many of my friends that saw the film, want to LIVE in Sugar Rush. It is just SO. PRETTY. The landscapes, the impeccable detail down to every sugary crumb, is just beautiful. The writing here is hysterical too, lots of candy puns and visual gags to keep you laughing. As my friend and I noted during the movie, once you get to the Sugar Rush scenes, it’s impossible not to want candy, so make sure you arrive to your seat well-stocked with movie snacks!

I truly hope Disney develops the other games featured in Wreck-It Ralph into full video games. While Fix-It Felix is a fun, nostalgic romp to video games past, Sugar Rush is a game I would find myself completely addicted to. And I know people online were asking to play Hero’s Duty as well. The games are just that good in the film, you don’t want to leave them behind when the credits roll. Even down to the theme songs for the games; Hero’s Duty is epically composed by Skrillex in a song that gets everyone’s heart pumping, while the Sugar Rush theme is sung, in English and Japanese, by Japanese supergroup ABK48 (and is now my phone’s ringtone).

Back to the story, believe it or not, it is a heartwarming tale of friendship and redemption. Without the full-on heartstring-pulling that Pixar is known for, I actually did shed a tear at the end of the film, when Ralph discovers his importance in the life of a child. Truly a life message, which Ralph delivers very matter-of-fact-ly, without sappy good-byes or any sad ending. I was completely satisfied when the movie ended, happy with every aspect of the film. I think this is an instant Disney classic and a home run for the entire Disney Animation team. So walk, run, jump, double jump, or “Up, Down, Up, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right, B, A” your way to theatres NOW to experience Wreck-It Ralph yourself.

Nicelanders celebrating in Wreck-It Ralph

Disclosure: I was provided a free screening of the film, and also attended a free screening held by the Disney Parks Blog. My opinions are my own and unaffected by this. It’s just that great!

Pete’s Dragon on Blu-Ray for Die-Hard Disney Fans

Pete's Dragon It had been quite some time since I’d seen Pete’s Dragon, other than Elliott lighting up the end of the Main Street Electrical Parade here at the Magic Kingdom. I was probably quite young and may have seen it when it was played on the original Disney Channel, but I really didn’t remember too much about it at all. For those like me, Pete’s Dragon is the endearing story between Pete and his invisible dragon friend Elliott as they develop a special bond and share a magical friendship.  With memorable characters and heartwarming songs including the 1977 Academy Award® “Best Original Song” nominee, “Candle On The Water,” Pete’s Dragon 35th Anniversary Edition is the perfect timeless classic die-hard Disney fans will love.

Here are a few clips to remind of the fun in Pete’s Dragon:

Now on Blu-ray for the first time ever, the disc features include the same bonus features as on the 2009 DVD release, but now in crystal clear Blu-ray release:

Disney’s Movie Magic a history of Disney’s magical mix of live action with animation, narrated by Sean Marshall (Pete), deleted Story board Sequence Terminus & Hoagy Hunt Elliot, rare demo dialog track and storyboard sketches, Original Song Concept: Boo Bop Bopbop Bop (I Love You Too) first demo recording March 1976 with story sketches for an early concept of the song Pete sings to Elliot, Original Demo Recordings: Brazzle Dazzle Day, Every Little Piece, The Greatest Star of All (Deleted Song for Deleted Character), Promotional Record, Four songs are pop versions of the songs used to promote the music and originally released on one 7 inch record including Academy Award nominated Candle on the Water.

Bring it home today for your family!

Club Penguin Halloween Party

Club Penguin is such a popular and fun site for kids to play games, create their own characters, and even better, get some Disney-exclusive costumes and settings for their games. I’m consistently impressed at the crossovers Club Penguin has with Marvel and now Disney’s Haunted Mansion too! Check out the official news below:

Ghosts and ghost hunters have taken over Disney’s Club Penguin, the #1 virtual world for kids, in its annual Halloween Party. With over 6 million penguins taking part in last year’s event, Club Penguin’s Halloween Party is the biggest Halloween event online for kids. The fun and fright continues in this year’s event, where players will need to solve the mystery of ghost-researcher Gariwald VIII’s disappearance and uncover the secrets behind his Walt Disney Parks and Resorts-inspired haunted mansion.

While solving the spooky mystery, members can turn into ghosts and haunt the Island, and all players will have the chance to become ghost hunters and catch rogue ghosts. Players can also listen to the latest Club Penguin single, “Ghosts Just Wanna Dance” and take part in two new spook-tacular scavenger hunts. The Halloween Party will begin on October 18 and run until November 1.

Some haunting highlights of the 2012 Club Penguin Halloween Party include:

  • Spooky Island Transformation: The Island will be overrun with ghosts and it is up to players to protect it by becoming ghost hunters.
  • Walt Disney Parks and Resorts-Inspired Haunted Mansion: This year’s party will feature a new haunted mansion, inspired by the Haunted Mansion attraction found at Walt Disney Parks and Resorts. By exploring the 9-room mansion, fans will discover numerous nods to the infamous ride, like the maid and butler costumes worn by Haunted Mansion cast members.

Club Penguin Halloween Party

  • Ghost Goggles and Ghost Lab: Once they find the Ghost Goggles hidden in the haunted mansion, players will be able to see the ghosts that are haunting the Island, as well unearth the Ghost Lab.
  • Spook-tacular Scavenger Hunts: Players can complete the “To Boo” list during two new Halloween Scavenger Hunts, giving them the chance to unlock a secret chest and earn new igloo items.
  • Brand New Song: Penguin Band featuring Cadence has released a haunting new song for Halloween – “Ghosts Just Wanna Dance,” that members can play in their igloo when throwing the ultimate Halloween party.
  • Cool Costumes: Players can dress their penguins in the coolest Halloween costumes yet – ghost catchers, ghosts, slices of pizza, ninja robots, creepy cats and more!
  • Famous Penguin Visits: Lucky players will be able to interact with Gary the Gadget Guy during the Halloween party, helping him solve the mystery of his great uncle Gariwald’s disappearance.
  • Igloo Contest: Club Penguin is holding their annual igloo contest, encouraging players to decorate with their most fearsome furnishings for the chance to win huge in-world prizes.

Iron Man 3 Official Trailer and Production Photos

While, after catching up on the Avengers series of films, Captain America takes a close second, Iron Man will always be my favorite. His acerbic wit and ability to be so pompous, full of ego, and self-deprecating at the same time has captured my heart from the first Iron Man. Now filming for Iron Man 3 is well under-way and we are now being treated to the first official trailer and some fun photos from the production. So let’s get right to that, because goodness knows, you are here to see Robert Downey Jr. not read my silly thoughts on him! (But if perhaps you’ve just emerged from a seaside cave that you’ve called home for the last 4 years, here’s the official synopsis of the newest adventures of Tony Stark –)

Iron Man 3 official images

Marvel’s “Iron Man 3” pits brash-but-brilliant industrialist Tony Stark/Iron Man against an enemy whose reach knows no bounds. When Stark finds his personal world destroyed at his enemy’s hands, he embarks on a harrowing quest to find those responsible. This journey, at every turn, will test his mettle. With his back against the wall, Stark is left to survive by his own devices, relying on his ingenuity and instincts to protect those closest to him. As he fights his way back, Stark discovers the answer to the question that has secretly haunted him: does the man make the suit or does the suit make the man?

Starring Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle, Guy Pearce, Rebecca Hall, Stephanie Szostak, James Badge Dale with Jon Favreau and Ben Kingsley,“Iron Man 3” is directed by Shane Black from a screenplay by Drew Pearce and Shane Black and is based on Marvel’s iconic Super Hero Iron Man, who first appeared on the pages of “Tales of Suspense” (#39) in 1963 and had his solo comic book debut with “The Invincible Iron Man” (#1) in May of 1968.

A magical fairy adventure for the whole family, Secret of the Wings invites audiences to join Tinker Bell and friends on their new adventure into the never-before-seen mysterious Winter Woods, where Tinker Bell finds out that she has a sister and discovers other incredible secrets that will change her life forever.   The film is the first Disney Fairies movie in more than two years, and marks the first time ever Tinker Bell will fly on Disney Blu-ray 3D.  A DisneyToon Studios production, the movie is directed by Peggy Holmes, co-directed by Bobs Gannaway, and produced by Michael Wigert.  John Lasseter serves as Executive Producer.

Secret of the Wings

We were able to screen this movie last weekend in 3D and it was just beautiful. My 12 year-old daughter and my 3 year-old son (and me!) all loved every minute on screen. The Disney Fairies films have really set the bar for quality straight-to-dvd animation and Secret of the Wings is no exception, with a wonderful voice cast and music to match. The storyline is a great story of learning from your past but not being afraid to try something new as well as working together to accomplish something great.

Some of my favorite parts of Secret of the Wings were the winter scenes, where animals “cross over” into the Winter Woods and get all new white fluffy coats of fur. Everything is just so sparkly and pretty, it’s hard not to fall in love. According to my 3 year-old, his favorite parts were, “the fixed wing part and the Tinker Bell’s friend part” and he highly endorsed the film! 😉

(It’s kind of hard to pin down a 3 year-old for a video interview!

We had a great time and I can’t wait to bring Secret of the Wings home on Blu-ray. It was a wonderful film and a fabulous addition to the to the Disney Fairies family of films. Secret of the Wings flits onto Blu-ray 3D, Blu-ray Hi-Def & DVD on October 23, 2012. You can find lots of fun activities at Disney.com/SecretOfTheWings or head to Facebook.com/DisneyFairies and like the page for updates.
